As He Steps Down, Starmer’s Future Plans Remain Unclear
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, preparing to leave office, has not yet decided his next steps, though friends and allies see him on the international stage.

As his time in Downing Street draws to a close, Keir Starmer has joked with friends about possible future activities, including taking a cookery course or trimming his father-in-law’s hedge. However, allies say he has not yet made a decision and wants to take time to think about his priorities.
Many who have worked closely with him believe he will end up in an international role, where he has earned respect from other leaders and is seen by voters as successful. Starmer has faced criticism for spending too much time abroad, but he argues that international and domestic affairs are intertwined. One friend suggested he might be interested in the role of NATO secretary general when a vacancy arises.
For now, Starmer plans to remain on the backbenches until the next election, though some friends are unsure he will stay that long. Local party members have urged him to remain to avoid a by-election that the Greens could win.
Regarding his legacy, Starmer told Sky News he might be remembered as the person who “saved the Labour party” after the Jeremy Corbyn era. He is proud of winning the general election despite widespread doubts.
Friends worry that the reality of leaving office may hit him hard when the busy schedule stops. Starmer himself has said he wants to be the best father and husband he can be.
