WIRED has released its 2026 roundup of top standing desks, while also flagging new research suggesting that too much standing can be as risky as too much sitting.

WIRED has published its annual guide to the best standing desks available in 2026, pairing product picks with a closer look at whether these desks actually deliver on their health promises.

Mixed research findings

New research suggests that while standing desks may reduce some risks tied to prolonged sitting, standing for too long can itself raise the risk of cardiovascular disease. Anne-Kristina Arnold, a kinesiology expert and senior lecturer at Simon Fraser University's Department of Biomedical Physiology and Kinesiology, told WIRED that it's impossible to say standing workstations benefit everyone in every situation, given how much body size, fitness level, and even footwear can vary. Her advice: if using a standing desk, spend about 20 minutes per hour standing; if using a regular desk, get up and move every 15 to 20 minutes. Ultimately, she says, walking matters more than the desk itself.

Electric versus manual

The guide notes that electric standing desks, which use motorized legs, suit people who adjust height frequently throughout the day, while manual models are a cheaper option for those who rarely need to change positions.

Ergonomics and cable safety

WIRED reiterates standard ergonomic guidance—keeping elbows at a 90-degree angle relative to the keyboard and monitors at eye level—and warns readers to watch their cables closely when raising a desk, since taut wires can snap or knock items off the surface.

Recommended models

Among the desks featured are the Luxor Compact Electric Standing Desk at $200, the Staples Union & Scale model at $513, the Autonomous Desk Pro at $600, the Ergodriven Tempo at $629, the Boulies Magvida at $760, the Vari Solid Wood desk at $829, the Simple Height Adjustable Desk at $850, the Herman Miller Jarvis Bamboo desk at $1,325, the Eureka Ergonomic Opal at $2,250, and the high-end Room & Board Lincoln desk at $5,399.
