The Edmonton Oilers have announced the signing of goaltender Frederik Andersen. The 36-year-old Dane agreed to a two-year deal with a total value of $2.8 million (approximately €2.46 million).
Andersen won the Stanley Cup last season as a member of the Carolina Hurricanes. During the regular season, he played 35 games, recording 16 wins, a 87.4% save percentage, and a 3.05 goals-against average. In the Stanley Cup playoffs, he had 13 wins in 15 games, a 1.89 GAA, a 91.0% save percentage, and three shutouts.
In 13 NHL seasons, Andersen has played for the Anaheim Ducks, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Hurricanes. His career totals include 552 regular-season games, 324 wins, a 2.59 GAA, a 91.3% save percentage, and 28 shutouts. In 101 playoff games, he has 59 wins, a 2.32 GAA, a 91.3% save percentage, and eight shutouts.
The Oilers also announced a four-year contract with defenseman Ryan Shea worth $20 million (€17.57 million). The 29-year-old spent the last three seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Last season, he recorded 35 points (6+29) in 80 games, and one assist in six playoff games.
The team also extended forward Kasperi Kapanen for one year at $2.6 million (€2.28 million). The Finnish forward had 17 points (8+9) in 41 games for the Oilers last season, and six points (4+2) in six playoff games.
It was previously reported that Latvian forward Eduards Tralmaks has signed a two-way contract with the Oilers. Additionally, the club selected Latvian forward Rūdolfs Bērzkalns 58th overall in the recent NHL Draft.
North American media had speculated that the Oilers might acquire Latvian goaltender Elvis Merzļikins from the Columbus Blue Jackets, but after signing Andersen, such a trade is unlikely.
