Stricter requirements for foreign students; some universities already acting
Several Latvian universities are tightening requirements for foreign students from third countries, while the Ministry of Education and Science has prepared nationwide stricter rules. Some proposals have faced objections from other ministries.
Ahead of the new academic year, a number of Latvian universities have announced they will independently strengthen requirements for foreign students from non-EU countries. These steps are being taken outside of national-level regulations.
At the same time, documents prepared by the Ministry of Education and Science (IZM) have been submitted to the government for approval, aiming to introduce stricter requirements for admitting foreign students across all universities. The proposed changes seek to establish uniform criteria to improve study quality and student integration.
However, some of the proposals are already facing opposition from other ministries. This indicates ongoing discussions about the application of the new rules and possible adjustments before a final decision is made.
