Heaviest Rainfall Recorded in Northern Kurzeme
The highest precipitation in Latvia over the past 24 hours was in northern Kurzeme, with Ventspils reaching 130% of the monthly norm. Thunderstorms are expected on Tuesday.
The most intense rainfall in Latvia over the past 24 hours has been in Kurzeme, especially its northern part, according to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre (LVĢMC). The Ventspils observation station recorded 83 millimeters, or 130% of the July monthly norm. In Stende, precipitation reached 74 mm (95% of the monthly norm), and Dobelē recorded 46 mm.
On Tuesday morning, rain continues in places in Kurzeme and northern Vidzeme, while the southeast of the country is mostly clear. Wind is generally light from the south, but the northern Kurzeme coast experiences stronger north-northeast winds, with gusts up to 20 m/s in Ventspils port overnight.
At 5 AM, air temperatures ranged from +10.1°C in Madona to +15.4°C in Liepāja port. In Riga, the early morning was cloudy with light drizzle, south wind at 4 m/s, temperature +13..+14°C. Monday's maximum temperatures ranged from +16.1°C in Liepāja to +23.7°C in Daugavpils.
Forecasters predict that new rain clouds will form on Tuesday, with intense thunderstorms expected in some areas in the afternoon and evening. Kurzeme will be mostly cloudy with prolonged rain, while the rest of the country will see sunny spells. Wind will be mostly light, stronger from the north in Kurzeme, with coastal gusts up to 18 m/s. Maximum temperatures will range from +15°C in Kurzeme to +18..+22°C in most of the country.
In Riga, rain, possibly heavy with thunderstorms, is expected in the afternoon and evening. A light south wind will shift to north by afternoon. Maximum temperature +21°C. The weather is caused by a cyclone, with atmospheric pressure 1007-1011 hPa.
