Stoltenberg steps down as chair of Munich Security Conference

Former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has announced his resignation from the position of chairman of the Munich Security Conference.

Stoltenberg explained that the decision stems from the need to fully dedicate himself to his responsibilities as Norway's finance minister. He indicated that holding both positions simultaneously was not feasible, prompting him to focus on his work within the Norwegian government.

The Munich Security Conference is one of the most important international forums, gathering heads of state and government, defense and foreign ministers, and other security policy experts each year to discuss global security challenges.

Stoltenberg served as NATO Secretary General for several years, leading the alliance through a number of significant international developments, including Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. After leaving his NATO post, he returned to Norwegian politics, taking on the role of finance minister.

It is not yet known who will take over as chairman of the Munich Security Conference following Stoltenberg's departure.
