Roma, with Strautiņš, beats Panevėžys for first win in ULEB EuroCup

Roma, for whom Latvian player Strautiņš plays, beat Lithuania's Panevėžys in the ULEB EuroCup. The Italian side took an early lead and held it to the end.

Roma beat Lithuanian side Panevėžys in a ULEB EuroCup game, picking up their first win of the tournament. The hosts started superbly and led 25:11 early on.

They then stayed a few points ahead for most of the game. The visitors from Lithuania closed in late on, getting to 87:88, but could not level the score or move in front.

Standout performers

Nicolò Manione and Montenegrin center Marko Simonović each scored 21 points and drew seven fouls. Simonović also grabbed seven rebounds.

Latvian Strautiņš played just under 20 minutes. He missed both of his two-point attempts, made two of four three-pointers and one of two free throws. He also had two rebounds and two turnovers, five fouls, a block, a steal and a drawn foul. His plus/minus figure was +3.

Other Group A results

In the group that also includes Rīgas Zeļļi, Derthona Tortona beat Le Mans 89:83, while Aris Thessaloniki defeated San Pablo Burgos 93:80. Hapoel Jerusalem and Aris lead the standings with two wins each. Rīgas Zeļļi, with one win and one loss, are fourth.

FIBA Champions League

In the FIBA Champions League, Murcia, coached by Sito Alonso, crushed Varese 85:58. Mārcis Šteinbergs scored three points in 13 minutes (0/1 on two-pointers, 1/4 on three-pointers), committed two fouls, and had one assist and one turnover. His plus/minus was -1.
