Stubb: "Ukraine is the best guarantee of our security against Russia"

Finnish President Alexander Stubb told German outlet Bild that Ukraine is currently in a stronger position than at any point since the war began and represents the best guarantee of European security against Russia. He also voiced doubt that Russia would launch a nuclear strike on Ukraine.

Finnish President Alexander Stubb said in an interview with the German outlet Bild that Ukraine is currently in a stronger and better position than at any time since the war began — militarily, politically and financially. According to him, Ukraine holds the advantage and will win the war.

Stubb stressed that survival, preserving independence and remaining a sovereign state already amounts to victory. He added that supporting Ukraine is also an investment in one's own security.

Ukraine as a security guarantee

The Finnish leader said that both Germany and Finland must recognize Ukraine as the best guarantee of their security against Russia. If Ukraine loses the war, he said, the rest of Europe loses too.

Stubb also expressed doubt about the likelihood of a Russian nuclear strike on Ukraine. He recalled that this summer he met with China's foreign minister and raised the issue directly, and the minister told him China would never allow that to happen. Stubb described this as a fairly effective deterrent.

It has previously been reported that Stubb named three directions that could bring the Russia-Ukraine war closer to an end. He also said he does not seek to be a public participant in negotiations to end the war, but is ready to act as a mediator if needed. According to him, Ukraine also needs to be prepared for the "worst case" scenario regarding the situation this coming winter.
