Suiti musical heritage explored in masterclasses
Annual summer masterclasses in Alsunga gave children and adults the chance to spend five days improving their kokle playing and singing with renowned musicians, culminating in a concert at Alsunga Castle.
Summer masterclasses have become a tradition aimed at preserving the musical heritage of the Suiti community. This year, both children and adults took part in an intensive five-day programme to enhance their skills.
Participants honed their kokle playing under the guidance of acclaimed kokle player Laima Jansone, while singing sessions were led by distinguished vocalist Ance Krauze. The pace of the work was demanding, as the five days of practice had to result in a closing concert at Alsunga Castle. The performance served as a vibrant finale, showcasing what the participants had learned.
The masterclasses are an important way of keeping Suiti musical traditions alive, passing knowledge from one generation to another. Bringing together people of different ages, the event allows a deeper understanding of this cultural heritage. Working closely with experienced musicians offers participants not only new skills but also an appreciation of the richness of Suiti songs and kokle music.
