Sunly and Magnora Data Center to jointly develop up to 400 MW data center in Estonia

Estonian renewable energy developer Sunly and Norwegian company Magnora Data Center will jointly develop a data center project near Risti, located in western Estonia about 60 kilometers south of Tallinn and 150 kilometers south of Helsinki.

Energy and connectivity advantages

The data center site is planned to connect both to the general power grid and to an adjacent Sunly energy park, which will include a 244 MWp solar park, a 144 MW battery energy storage system, and a 44 MW wind park. A nearby substation already offers a 180 MW connection, and after planned upgrades the capacity is expected to grow to 400 MW. The site also has access to high-capacity fiber optic connectivity, with round-trip latency to Helsinki under five milliseconds, as it sits along a route linking Tallinn and Helsinki to internet hubs in Frankfurt.

Company perspectives

Magnora Data Center chairman Erik Sneve highlighted the site's access to renewable energy and strong connectivity, saying the combination matches the demands of major data center operators. Sunly CEO Priit Lepasepp said the Risti project brings together the key elements of the company's strategy, allowing a large power consumer to be integrated with solar, wind, and battery capacity in one system.

Context on Estonia and Sunly

Magnora pointed to Estonia's technological development, close ties with Nordic countries, and leading role in cybersecurity, as well as the country's goal of reaching 100% renewable electricity consumption by 2030. Sunly has developed 1,000 MW of renewable energy capacity across the Baltics and Poland since 2019, with investors including Mirova, the EBRD, and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners. Under the joint venture agreement, Sunly will continue leading local project implementation while Magnora Data Center will handle commercial strategy and client relations.
