Superhuman, the company known for its AI writing assistant Grammarly, has announced the acquisition of GPTZero, a service specializing in AI content identification. GPTZero offers tools for detecting hallucinations and plagiarism, and it also provides a feature that shows how much of the internet is generated by artificial intelligence.

According to Superhuman, the plan is to integrate GPTZero into its Superhuman Go AI assistant to enhance its existing efforts around AI and authenticity. The company stated that teachers and students will remain the priority audience following the acquisition. GPTZero emphasized that Superhuman would help place its tools in environments where people are already reading and writing.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. On the surface, the acquisition appears unusual: Superhuman actively promotes the use of AI to generate content, while GPTZero helps identify such content. The press release announcing the deal focuses on public concerns about identifying AI-generated material. However, Superhuman has faced controversy before—the company previously attempted to provide users with AI-generated feedback that mimicked the voice and style of other writers, leading to backlash.
