Swiss Football Association refuses to back Infantino for FIFA presidency
The Swiss Football Association has announced it will not support Gianni Infantino in next year's FIFA presidential election, citing unanswered questions about transparency and accountability.
The Swiss Football Association (SFV) has officially stated it will not back Gianni Infantino's bid in next year's FIFA presidential election. The decision aligns Switzerland with several other European football federations that have also declined to support the current FIFA leader.
SFV president Peter Knäbel explained that the Swiss governing body expects FIFA's leadership to meet higher standards of transparency, accountability and institutional responsibility. According to him, significant questions about duties and decision-making processes within the organization remain unanswered, and as long as they are not convincingly clarified, the SFV cannot justify further support for Infantino's candidacy.
Not all European federations share this stance — this week the Latvian Football Federation (LFF) expressed its support for Infantino.
Infantino intends to run for the FIFA presidency despite criticism over his earlier plan to attract private investment for the World Cup, which FIFA was forced to abandon following widespread protests. If re-elected for a fourth term, Infantino would continue serving as FIFA president until 2031.
