Switzerland to establish drone battalion by 2028

Switzerland's Defence Ministry has announced plans for a new drone battalion, which the army will deploy starting in 2028. The unit will handle reconnaissance, operations and defence tasks, supported by a dedicated recruitment and training program.

Joint civil-military centre

The ministry also outlined plans for a combined civil and military centre focused on drones and robotics. It would consist of two parts — a technology hub and a military command structure. The goal is for new solutions to be jointly developed and tested, allowing rapid adaptation for military use.

Strategic priority

The Defence Ministry stated that drones, counter-drone defence systems and robotics have now become a strategic priority for the country. The decision reflects drones' growing role in modern conflicts, where they are used both for surveillance and intelligence gathering, and for strikes on enemy positions, increasingly aided by artificial intelligence.

The ministry noted an increase in observed drone flights over Swiss military sites and critical infrastructure. The country has already deployed its first counter-drone defence system.

Neutrality context

Switzerland has long maintained a policy of armed neutrality, and mandatory military service applies to men in the country. Swiss neutrality traces back to 1516, though it has been internationally recognized since 1815.
