Historic victory

Switzerland defeated Algeria 2-0 in the round of 32 on Thursday evening in Vancouver, marking their first knockout stage win in decades. The victory ended a long-standing curse for the Nati, who have struggled in elimination matches for years.

Match highlights

Breel Embolo opened the scoring in the 10th minute after a brilliant solo run by Johan Manzambi down the left flank. Manzambi set up Embolo, who finished clinically at the near post. Dan Ndoye doubled the lead early in the second half (46th minute) following a poor clearance from Algeria's Rafik Belghali. Ndoye cut inside and found the far corner with a precise finish.

Team performance

Switzerland's clinical efficiency contrasted with Algeria's recklessness. The Fennecs started brightly, with attacking intent and chances for Aouar and Mahrez, but lacked cutting edge in the final third. Switzerland's midfield duo of Granit Xhaka and Denis Zakaria controlled the game, allowing the attack to exploit Algeria's defensive vulnerabilities. The Swiss defense, aided by Manzambi's work rate, repelled Algeria's pressure.

Algeria attempted a comeback in the second half but could not break through Switzerland's organized defense. Despite introducing fresh attacking options, they failed to score, and Ndoye's goal effectively ended the contest.

Next opponent

Switzerland will face the winner of Friday's match between Ghana and Colombia in the round of 16, scheduled for next Tuesday.
