Gunfire broke out early Sunday morning in the northern Swiss town of Aarau, near Zurich, as attendees of an annual rave were heading home. The event had drawn around 3,500 people.

A 22-year-old woman from Italy was killed at the scene; attempts to resuscitate her were unsuccessful. Five other people were injured — four Swiss nationals and one German national, aged between 24 and 31 — with some described as seriously hurt.

Suspect taken into custody

On Monday, shortly before 1 a.m., police detained a 43-year-old Swiss man suspected of being behind the shooting. The Aargau cantonal police said in a statement that the man was arrested based on serious suspicion of having committed the crime.

An investigation into the exact sequence of events, the circumstances and a possible motive is still underway. Police currently believe a single perpetrator was responsible, though the inquiry has not concluded.
