Switzerland booked their spot in the World Cup quarterfinals after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Colombia on Tuesday in Vancouver. The match ended 0-0 after extra time, with Gregor Kobel saving Cucho Hernandez's penalty and Ruben Vargas converting the decisive spot-kick to secure a 4-3 win for the Swiss.

Both teams were defensively solid throughout. Colombia had conceded only once in their previous four matches, and Switzerland had also proved difficult to break down. The first notable chance came in the 21st minute when Swiss goalkeeper Kobel made a flying save to deny Gustavo Puerta's curling effort from the edge of the box.

Switzerland responded strongly after the first hydration break, with Colombia goalkeeper Camilo Vargas making saves against Fabian Rieder and Dan Ndoye. The first half ended goalless, with both sides struggling for creativity.

In the second half, Switzerland started brightly, but Colombia also had opportunities, including a wayward shot from Luis Suarez. Colombia's star winger Luis Diaz was kept quiet. Ndoye sent a shot across goal in stoppage time, but no one could turn it in, sending the game to extra time.

Extra time saw more action. Colombia defender Jhon Lucumi headed against the crossbar from a corner, and Kobel saved a fierce effort from Jaminton Campaz. At the other end, Vargas denied substitute Zeki Amdouni. Campaz missed a golden chance to win the match with five minutes remaining.

The match went to penalties, where Kobel's save on Hernandez and Vargas's successful kick sealed the win. Switzerland will face Argentina in Kansas City on Saturday, after Lionel Messi's team earlier beat Egypt 3-2 in Atlanta. This is Switzerland's first quarterfinal appearance since they hosted the tournament in 1954.
