A shooting overnight in northern Switzerland has left one person dead and five others injured, according to Aargau Cantonal Police. Authorities confirmed a search is under way for the perpetrator, whose identity remains unknown.

Investigators said it is still too early to determine a motive or establish the precise circumstances surrounding the attack.

Where it happened

The gunfire occurred close to a horse racing track in the Schachen area of Aarau, a town roughly 46km (29 miles) west of Zurich. A rave had been planned nearby, set to run into the early hours of Sunday morning.

Police have cordoned off a wide area encompassing the racetrack, the town's public swimming pool and its sports field, urging residents and visitors to keep away from the zone while the investigation continues.

Extra security measures

As a precaution, additional police units have been sent to areas beyond Aarau itself. Investigators have also called on anyone who witnessed the incident to send in any photos or video footage they may have captured, to assist the ongoing manhunt.
