Tourist bus crashes into barrier in Switzerland, several killed
Several people died on Thursday in Switzerland's Graubünden canton after a tourist bus collided with a road barrier and overturned. Most of the 48 passengers on board are reportedly Dutch nationals.
A serious road accident occurred on Thursday in the Swiss canton of Graubünden, killing several people. According to broadcaster SRF, a tourist bus travelling from Zernez towards Susch collided with a barrier in a road construction zone, veered off the road and overturned onto its side.
Police have not yet specified the exact number of dead and injured. According to available information, 48 passengers were on board the bus, most of whom are reportedly Dutch citizens.
Rescue operation
Several emergency services responded to the scene, including the Rega air rescue service, multiple ambulance crews and firefighters. Forces from other cantons were also called in to assist, including the cantonal police of St. Gallen. Authorities and rescue teams continued their work into the evening and overnight, and the affected stretch of road was temporarily closed.
Swiss President Guy Parmelin expressed his "deep shock and dismay" over the accident. He announced on the X platform that Swiss authorities would carry out a thorough and comprehensive investigation into the incident.
The crash follows other recent bus-related accidents in Europe: in late August, an accident involving a bus carrying German secondary school students occurred in the eastern Netherlands, and recently seven people, including two police officers, died in a road accident in northeastern England after a vehicle travelling in the oncoming lane of a main road collided with a police car.
