The 2026 FIFA World Cup, hosted across three countries, continues on Saturday with a Group B clash between Switzerland and Qatar. The match kicks off at 9:50 PM EET and will be broadcast live on ETV+ and Rus.ERR with commentary in Russian by ERR sports journalists Igor Savelyev and Alexei Margiev.
Switzerland approach the match as group favorites, having secured four wins and two draws in qualifying to top their group. In four pre-tournament friendlies, they beat Jordan, drew with Australia and Norway, but lost 3-4 to Germany in March. The Swiss have appeared at every World Cup since 2006, but the era of their so-called "golden generation" is ending – Xherdan Shaqiri, Fabian Schär, and Yann Sommer have retired from international duty. Captain Granit Xhaka anchors the midfield, while defender Ricardo Rodriguez brings extensive international experience. Coach Murat Yakin, himself a 49-cap Swiss international, remains at the helm, having led the team to the round of 16 in Qatar and the quarterfinals at the European Championship two years ago.
Qatar made their World Cup debut three and a half years ago as tournament hosts, losing all three group matches against Ecuador, Senegal, and the Netherlands. In Asian qualifying, Qatar won 10 of 18 matches to secure their second-ever berth, beating the United Arab Emirates 2-1 last October. However, that was their last international win; Qatar have gone winless in three pre-tournament friendlies and three Arab Nations Cup matches. In May last year, experienced Spaniard Julen Lopetegui was appointed head coach, facing the challenge of shoring up a defense that conceded 24 goals in 10 matches during the second qualifying round. The team boasts experience: captain Hassan Al-Haydos holds the record with 186 caps, all-time top scorer Almoez Ali leads the attack alongside dynamic Akram Afif, and 23-year-old Mohamed Manai is considered Qatar's brightest hope.
The match will be held at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California, on the U.S. West Coast. The venue, home of the San Francisco 49ers NFL team, opened in summer 2014 and has hosted two Super Bowls, including the final game in February this year. Group B also includes Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina, who drew 1-1 on Friday. The top two teams from the group advance to the knockout stage, with third place also having a chance to progress.
