Switzerland to give $730,000 to rebuild UNESCO cathedral roof damaged by Russian drone strike
A Russian drone strike damaged the roof of the Dormition Cathedral at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, a UNESCO World Heritage site, just two months before its 975th anniversary. Switzerland has pledged $730,000 to help repair the damage.
The Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, one of the oldest and most significant Orthodox monastic complexes in Eastern Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage site, has suffered damage from a Russian drone strike. The attack struck the Dormition Cathedral, reportedly damaging around 80% of its roof.
The strike occurred just two months before the Lavra's 975th anniversary, adding symbolic weight to the incident, given the monastery's standing as one of the oldest monuments of Christian culture and history in Ukraine and the wider region.
Switzerland steps in to help
In response to the damage, Switzerland has committed $730,000 toward repairing the cathedral's roof. The funding is intended to address the destruction caused by the drone strike and help preserve the historic site.
As a UNESCO-protected cultural and religious landmark, the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra holds deep significance for both Ukraine's spiritual heritage and its broader cultural identity. Strikes on such sites tend to draw international attention and condemnation, as they affect not only Ukrainian heritage but values shared more widely across Europe.
