Svikss wins gold, Bogomazovs bronze at UCI BMX Challenge World Championship
Latvian young BMX riders excelled at the UCI BMX Challenge World Championship in Brisbane, with Helmuts Svikss claiming gold in the B10 group.
Success in B10 Group
On Thursday in Brisbane, Australia, the second day of the UCI BMX Challenge World Championship saw outstanding performances from Latvian athletes. In the B10 group, featuring 83 participants, Helmuts Svikss of "BMX Ādaži" took the victory. This is his second consecutive world champion title, though last year he competed under the USA flag. Mateo Bogomazovs secured third place, while Kristians Blūmanis finished fourth, both also from "BMX Ādaži".
Path to the Final
All three Latvians convincingly advanced through the qualifying heats. In the eighth-finals, only Blūmanis faced a slight challenge, finishing fourth. In the quarter-finals, Svikss and Bogomazovs won their heats, while Blūmanis placed third. In the semi-finals, Bogomazovs and Blūmanis finished second, and Svikss came third.
The Grand Final
In the final, a New Zealand rider led until mid-track but then crashed. Svikss took the lead, closely followed by the other two Latvians. On the finishing straight, Svikss solidified his advantage, claiming the win. Bogomazovs held onto third, and Blūmanis finished fourth.
Other Latvian Performances
In the M40–44 cruiser group, Kristaps Ozoliņš (also a "BMX Ādaži" coach) finished 11th, while Mārtiņš Strazdiņš-Stradiņš placed 43rd out of 53 participants. A total of five Latvian representatives competed in the championship.
On Saturday, the last Latvian athlete, Melānija Čudare, will compete in the G16 girls group.
