Świątek ousts Kostyuk to reach Toronto quarterfinals
Poland's Iga Świątek defeated Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk in three sets to advance to the Toronto tournament quarterfinals. Fellow Ukrainian Elina Svitolina is set to face American Amanda Anisimova.
At the WTA tournament in Toronto, eighth-ranked Iga Świątek defeated Ukraine's second racket Marta Kostyuk 3:6, 6:1, 6:2 in the round of 16. The 25-year-old Pole entered the match as the clear favorite, with bookmakers offering odds of 1.66 on her victory.
After dropping the opening set to Kostyuk, Świątek took control of the match and won the remaining two sets convincingly. Statistics show the Pole's dominance — she won 52% of points on her opponent's second serve, compared to Kostyuk's 37%. Świątek also led in total points won, 85 to 74, and converted seven of 15 break-point chances against Kostyuk's four of 13. The two were close on aces, while the difference in double faults was minimal.
The win extended Świątek's head-to-head record against Kostyuk to 4-1. This marked the Pole's third appearance in the Toronto tournament; she had previously stopped at the round of 16 on both occasions, making this her best result at the event so far.
Svitolina to face Anisimova
Ukraine's top-ranked player, Elina Svitolina, is set to play American Amanda Anisimova, the tournament's tenth seed, later tonight. The 31-year-old Ukrainian entered the match as the favorite, with bookmakers setting odds of 1.63 on her win. Her head-to-head record against Anisimova stands at 4-1 in her favor.
This will be Svitolina's fifth appearance at the Toronto tournament, where she previously won the title in 2017.
