Same start but different outlook at Rangers as McInnes era begins
Derek McInnes's first game as Rangers manager ended in a 1-1 draw at Dundee United, a result that mirrored last season's opener but with a calmer reaction. The new boss called for patience and reinforcements.
Rangers' season kicked off with a familiar scoreline but a fresh perspective, as Derek McInnes's tenure began with a 1-1 draw at Dundee United. A year after Russell Martin's public criticism of his squad following a similar opening-day draw at Motherwell, the tone was notably more measured.
McInnes, who previously led Aberdeen, Kilmarnock and Hearts, stressed the need for time and new arrivals during this transitional summer. His side fell behind to Lachlan Rose's first-half strike, then improved after the break with Thelo Aasgaard equalising. Rangers couldn't find a winner and almost conceded late when Jesse Randall's tame effort was saved by debutant goalkeeper Ivor Pandur.
"It's disappointing - we've dropped a couple of points, but we weren't good enough to get all three," McInnes said, while also noting that the team will get better as the season progresses. He emphasized the need for trust and doing simple things better.
Former Rangers striker Steven Thompson advised against panic, pointing out that a point away from a tough venue is not a bad result. He noted that Rangers are a work in progress and that McInnes will learn from the game.
In contrast, ex-Rangers player Andy Halliday was critical of the team's shape, arguing they were not compact and that Dundee United had the better individual performers apart from Aasgaard. Several new signings made their debuts, including Ben Godfrey, Cammy Devlin, Lawrence Shankland, and Dan Neil and Ross McCrorie from the bench. McInnes indicated further additions are planned.
