Typhoon Danas makes landfall on China's eastern coast, a million evacuated
Typhoon Danas hit China's densely populated eastern coast on Sunday, forcing the evacuation of roughly a million people and the cancellation of more than 1,000 flights.
Typhoon Danas made landfall on China's eastern coast on Sunday evening, China's National Meteorological Centre (NMC) reported, according to information carried by Euronews. The storm's centre came ashore at around 5:30pm local time near the city of Yuhuan in Zhejiang province, with maximum wind speeds near its centre exceeding 150 kilometres per hour at landfall.
Chinese authorities had spent the preceding days preparing for the storm's arrival. In some areas along the typhoon's forecast path, business operations and transport services were suspended, and the highest-level storm warning was issued.
Mass evacuations and flight cancellations
In the city of Wenzhou, authorities evacuated more than 900,000 residents and opened over 1,000 emergency shelters. In total, roughly one million people were displaced because of the storm.
Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported that nearly 1,400 arriving and departing flights were cancelled on Sunday at Shanghai's two main passenger airports, while 270 flights were cancelled at Hangzhou airport in nearby Zhejiang province. More than 1,000 flights were cancelled in total.
Meteorologists warned that central and eastern parts of Zhejiang province could see rainfall of 250 to 500 millimetres in places, raising the risk of flooding.
