Man detained in Tallinn on suspicion of breaking into apartment and stealing from it
Police in Tallinn have detained a 36-year-old man suspected of breaking into an apartment in the Kalamaja district and stealing an item in front of the victim. A court has ordered him held in custody for two months at the prosecutor's request.
A 36-year-old man has been detained in Tallinn's Kalamaja district on suspicion of unlawfully entering an apartment and committing a theft while the victim was present. The Northern Prefecture reported on Saturday, September 12, that police received a report about the break-in at the end of August.
According to investigators, the man stole a memory card from a home security camera, doing so in the presence of the person living there. Police were able to identify the suspect with help from tips submitted by local residents. Investigators questioned witnesses and reviewed surveillance camera footage as part of the inquiry.
Possible link to other incidents
Authorities say they had previously received multiple calls connected to the same man. Investigators believe he may also be linked to other break-ins and thefts that have occurred in Kalamaja.
Prosecutors noted that the man has prior convictions for theft, and that evidence gathered in the current investigation, combined with his history, suggests that committing thefts has become a way of life for him. Earlier this year a less strict preventive measure had been applied to him, but prosecutors say this did not stop him from committing further offenses. As a result, prosecutors asked the court to place him in custody, and the court granted a two-month detention order.
