Tallinn to host exhibition of Masayoshi Sukita's David Bowie photographs
Estonia's Poco Art Museum will open a solo exhibition of Japanese photographer Masayoshi Sukita's David Bowie portraits on 9 October, the artist's first showing in the country. The show features over one hundred images spanning a 40-year creative partnership.
Starting 9 October, Tallinn's Poco Art Museum will open a solo exhibition by Japanese photographer Masayoshi Sukita dedicated to pop icon David Bowie, marking the first time his work has been displayed in Estonia.
The exhibition brings together more than one hundred photographs documenting the roughly four-decade creative relationship between Bowie and Sukita. Tallinn is the show's next stop on its European tour, following an earlier run in Gothenburg.
International recognition
Poco founder Linnar Viik said the 'Bowie x Sukita' exhibition has already toured some of the world's largest museums and cultural institutions. He described its arrival in Tallinn as confirmation that Poco now operates at an international level alongside leading art institutions, adding that Tallinn's public deserves access to world-class art in their own city.
An unlikely connection
Sukita and Bowie's collaboration began under unusual circumstances: Sukita spoke no English, and Bowie spoke no Japanese. Still, after spotting a Bowie poster on a London street in 1972, Sukita knew immediately he had to photograph him. He went on to follow Bowie across the globe, capturing him at press conferences in Tokyo, during studio sessions in Berlin, on the streets of Kyoto, and on concert stages in New York.
The exhibition, titled 'Bowie x Sukita x Poco,' will remain open until 25 April next year.
