Tallinn braces for traffic disruptions during Ironman weekend

Tallinn will host its annual Ironman triathlon on 22–23 August, featuring both the full triathlon distance and the 70.3 variant. The event will bring significant disruption for drivers, pedestrians and public transport users across the city.

The areas most affected are Haabersti in the west, Põhja-Tallinn in the north, and parts of the south, since the swimming leg will take place on Lake Raku.

Public transport changes

Several bus routes will be diverted over the two days. Routes 8, 21, 25, 26, 41, 42 and 54 will be diverted from Saturday morning until 8 p.m. on Sunday. Routes 27, 36 and 61 will be diverted during daytime hours on both days, while a temporary route 77 will run between the Oja tee and Harkujärve stops west of the city. Route 62 will be suspended completely, and route 57 will only be diverted in the mornings.

Road closures

Viljandi mnt will be closed between Valdeku tänav and the Kangru junction — from 5 a.m. to 12.15 p.m. on Saturday, and from 6.50 a.m. to 12.35 p.m. on Sunday. Paldiski mnt will be closed between Tuuleveski tänav and Tutermaa — from 7.30 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, and from 8.35 a.m. to 4.35 p.m. on Sunday. In addition, the outbound lane of Paldiski mnt will be restricted between Vesiravila and Mõisapõllu streets, affecting several nearby junctions.

Licensed traffic controllers will manage the closures and allow access for residents and local services on a case-by-case basis. Roads will stay open to emergency vehicles throughout. Pedestrians crossing the race route should expect waits of up to 30 minutes in some spots.

Organizers have confirmed all residents will be able to reach their homes, although delays may occur. Roads will reopen immediately after the last competitor passes and temporary equipment is cleared away.
