Tallinn's "Knitting Raves" blend dancing with crafting

A recurring party series in Tallinn is letting guests combine dancing with knitting or crocheting, offering a mellower, alcohol-free alternative to conventional nightlife. The so-called Knitting Raves take place at Põhjala Factory's ankruSAAL hall and welcome both experienced crafters and complete beginners who have never picked up needles or a hook.

Organizer Kaari Põlder said the events helped her return to crocheting after more than a two-decade break. She noted that dancing while knitting turns out to be easier than expected, and that she was surprised at how quickly her skills came back.

The events run from 6 to 10 p.m., featuring two DJs who each play two-hour dance sets and take requests from the crowd. People of all ages and genders are welcome, and those who prefer not to dance can simply sit and craft instead.

The organizers got the idea after watching videos of similar knitting raves held in Amsterdam, where the format has already become popular. The events fit into the broader trend of "soft clubbing," which offers alternatives to traditional nightlife, including morning coffee shop raves, daytime dance parties and other alcohol-free gatherings. Põlder pointed out that parties don't necessarily need to start late at night.

Fellow organizer and crafts teacher Kristiin Sidok said the mix of crafting and dancing can be contagious — some attendees show up without a project of their own but leave inspired to start one. She recommends beginners stick to simple, uncomplicated projects so they can multitask and chat with others around them. Craft supplies are available for purchase on-site, and yarn bags can be borrowed for those dancing while working on a project. Anyone who gets stuck can also ask Sidok for help. Põhjala Factory's next Knitting Rave is scheduled for this Friday at 6 p.m.
