Eight men claiming to be from Ethiopia detained in central Tallinn in one day
On August 3, police in central Tallinn detained eight men who claimed to be from Ethiopia, on suspicion of illegal residence; they were taken to a temporary detention center for foreigners.
Police from the Põhja Prefecture detained two groups of men in central Tallinn on August 3, with reasonable grounds to suspect they were staying in Estonia illegally.
The first group of six men was detained in Tammsaare Park. The men stated that they had arrived from the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and entered Europe via Belarus. All six were taken to the temporary detention center for foreigners.
Later the same day, two more men were detained in central Tallinn, also claiming to be from Ethiopia. They had no identification documents with them. They too were taken to the temporary detention center for foreigners.
In recent weeks, dozens of illegal migrants have been identified across Estonia. According to police, organized criminal groups are attempting to move these individuals through Estonia to other countries. Estonia's Police and Border Guard Board says that effective work is being carried out both at the borders and within the country, and that residents have no reason to panic.
