Tallinn Airport sets new passenger record in July
Tallinn Airport served over 384,000 passengers in July, its best-ever monthly result, with growth of nearly 20 percent year on year.
Tallinn Airport handled a record number of travelers in July, surpassing 384,000 passengers and achieving its strongest monthly performance on record. The figure represents a year-on-year increase of almost 20 percent.
The growth was largely driven by low-cost carrier Wizz Air, which has been expanding its operations in Tallinn rapidly over the past year. In July, Wizz Air accounted for 19 percent of all passengers at the airport and served nine direct destinations. Meanwhile, airBaltic remained the largest airline with a 29 percent market share. In total, 19 airlines operated scheduled and charter flights from Tallinn to nearly 50 destinations during the month.
Eero Pärgmäe, a member of Tallinn Airport’s management board, said the 19 percent jump in passenger numbers confirms strong demand for air travel. He attributed the increase to greater airline capacity and a more varied network of routes. He also welcomed the fact that new connections to Poland, Hungary and Italy have brought more tourists to Estonia, with passenger growth spread across a growing number of destinations.
Scheduled flights accounted for 94 percent of passengers, while charter flights made up the remaining 6 percent. Warsaw was the most popular direct route, followed by Helsinki, Riga, Frankfurt and Stockholm. The airport recorded 4,101 take-offs and landings, an average of 132 flight operations per day.
Estonia’s regional airports also saw higher passenger numbers, serving a combined 9,181 travelers in July. Kuressaare Airport posted the strongest growth, handling a record 5,037 passengers thanks to the new seasonal Helsinki route. Tartu Airport served 2,223 passengers under its reduced summer schedule, Kärdla Airport handled 1,709, Pärnu Airport 204, and Ruhnu Airfield eight.
The number of tickets sold for the coming months suggests the summer travel season will remain active until the end of October. In the first seven months of the year, Tallinn Airport served 2.15 million passengers, an 11 percent increase compared with the same period last year.
