Tallinn may extend public transport hours to airport into night
Tallinn city officials are considering extending public transport service hours to the airport, as current schedules do not meet the needs of passengers on early flights.
Tallinn's deputy mayor for transport, Joel Jesse, said city authorities are analysing the possibility of extending operating hours for public transport serving the airport. No final decision has been made yet, and the matter is still under review.
Tram service to the airport was restored in August, giving passengers access from both Kopli and Tondi. However, this has not fully met demand. Trams to the airport are used not only by air travellers but also by employees of the Ülemiste City business district. According to city government data, around 6,000 people use the tram to reach Ülemiste daily.
The first trams arrive at the airport at approximately 5:30 am, while the last depart around 12:45 am. This schedule creates problems for travellers departing on early morning flights.
Jesse said transport links must be ensured during peak hours. He explained that timetables for public transport serving the airport are determined by demand, and the possibility of extending a night bus route to the airport cannot be ruled out. It remains unclear when any changes would be introduced.
