TalTech summer production revisits 1968 student life in Tallinn

TalTech's summer production "Now I Study in Mustamäe" invites audiences on a journey through Tallinn in 1968, when students pursued dreams, love and life under Soviet rule. The story centers on Kaarel, a talented automation and telemechanics student from the countryside, and his dormitory roommates. Together they wrestle with timeless questions: how to chase their dreams, find love and achieve success while staying true to themselves. Their personal stories unfold against a turbulent historical backdrop — Soviet restrictions and KGB surveillance stand in stark contrast to the Prague Spring, Western rock and roll and rapid technological change. The play is written by Andra Teede and produced by the TalTech Alumni Association, drawing on firsthand memories of alumni from that era.

Director Veiko Tubin said the theme of freedom attracted him to the story. "These young people lived in times where they had fewer choices than people do today, but their dreams were no smaller," Tubin commented, noting that despite restrictions, students back then still found ways to have fun and carry out groundbreaking science. He added that the production is not just about a single graduating class or even a university, but about people trying to find their place in the world.

"Now I Study in Mustamäe" opens Friday evening in the TalTech courtyard, with performances continuing rain or shine. The cast includes Jass Kalev Mäe, Maris Nõlvak, Theodor Tabor, Karl Robert Saaremäe, Oskar Punga, Egon Nuter, Kadri Lepp, Martin Mill, Piret Krumm, Ingrid Pappel, Kristjan Knight, Iko-Erik Uustalu, Sander Kõiv, Johanna Poll, Mia-Marleen Tõnis and Kevin Räim.
