A widespread power outage struck Tartu and its vicinity on the evening of June 9, lasting nearly 20 minutes. The blackout affected traffic lights, causing traffic disruptions, and also plunged the region's largest hospital, the Tartu University Hospital, into darkness.

Estonian transmission system operator Elering explained that the outage resulted from a coincidence of several factors. At the time of the incident, planned maintenance work was underway on the grid, which had reduced the system's safety margin. This was compounded by a technical failure and human error.

According to Elering, such a combination of circumstances is rare but led to a temporary yet significant power interruption for a large number of consumers. An investigation is currently ongoing to determine the exact causes and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
