Two longtime tenants set to leave Tartu's Genialistide Klubi
Theater Must Kast and bar Möku are both moving out of Tartu's subcultural venue Genialistide Klubi, citing uncertainty over its future and their own growth plans. The club says it will seek new partners.
Tartu's self-described subcultural center Genialistide Klubi is losing two of its longest-standing subtenants, as theater company Must Kast and bar Möku both prepare to relocate after more than a decade at the venue.
Both operators point to uncertainty surrounding the club's future, along with their own ambitions to expand, as reasons for the move. Genialistide Klubi has occupied its premises at Magasini tänav 5 since 2008 and has spent roughly the last year and a half dealing with noise complaints from neighbors. Despite efforts to reduce noise levels, those measures have not yet satisfied the City of Tartu, which has withheld nearly €45,000 in annual program funding as a result.
Must Kast is relocating to the Estonian National Museum, where it plans to stage its first performances in early October. Director Merilyn Elge said the theater's technical and stability needs have evolved over the years in ways the club can no longer accommodate, adding that persistent unresolved questions about the venue's situation factored into the decision.
Möku Bar, which announced its move last week, plans to reopen by mid-December aboard Sisevete Saatkond, a historic barge docked on the Emajõgi river. Co-owner Kaarel Jõudvald said the bar prefers running a low-key establishment, distinguishing that from Genialistide Klubi's role as a cultural and events venue. This will be Möku's second move since it joined the club in 2015.
Möku's revenue has historically covered a significant portion of the club's rent. Even so, club manager Juhan Kari expressed confidence that new operators would be found, describing Genialistide Klubi as a long-running creative incubator that seeks meaningful partners rather than tenants simply looking to fill space.
Meanwhile, the club still expects to secure this year's municipal funding, since August noise measurements came in within permitted limits. Tartu's Department of Culture said the final amount will depend on the club's application and its event schedule, with a meeting between the city and the club set for Wednesday.
Genialistide Klubi was founded in 2006 and has been based at its current Magasini tänav location since 2008.
