Tartu begins search for Christmas tree for Town Hall Square

Authorities in the Estonian city of Tartu have launched a search for a spruce tree that will serve as the city's main Christmas tree this year, decorating the Town Hall Square. The Tartu city government announced the search on Monday, September 7.
Officials said they are particularly interested in offers from landowners who are already planning to cut down a large spruce in the near future. When selecting the tree, the city will consider not only its appearance but also its history and origin.
Requirements for the tree
A suitable tree must be at least 15 meters tall. It is also important that heavy machinery can reach the tree, and the spruce must be located within a 100-kilometer radius of Tartu.
Applications, including a photograph of the tree, can be submitted by email to the Tartu city government's municipal services department until October 15. Based on the photos, specialists will select the most suitable candidates before inspecting them in person.
City officials noted that the tree's history and the location where it grew may also play a role in the final decision. Last year, Tartu's Christmas tree was found in Põlva County.
