Tartu to Install Light Installation Honoring Tartu Ski Marathon
The Tartu City Council has approved a tender for an installation celebrating the Tartu Ski Marathon, designed by artist Kärt Maran, to be opened in winter 2027.

The Tartu City Council has approved a tender for the installation of a commemorative piece dedicated to the Tartu Ski Marathon. The opening is scheduled for the 2027 Tartu Marathon.
The light installation, created by artist Kärt Maran, will be placed at the starting point of the first Tartu Marathon in 1960 on the frozen Emajõgi River. During dark hours, it will project the starting line of that first marathon onto the river.
A vertical metal pole with lights will be installed in the river to project the beam onto the start line. The pole will also feature a brief text about the marathon's history and photographs from the first event.
The tender for design, manufacturing, and installation was won by Vennad Ehitus. The cost is 50,700 euros, and the installation will be unveiled in winter 2027, just before the next ski marathon. Funding comes from the city budget and private donations from many Estonian residents.
