Tele2 invests €800,000 to expand 5G coverage along the Via Baltica highway
Tele2 is investing roughly €800,000 to ensure uninterrupted 5G coverage along the Via Baltica highway in Latvia, with the EU co-financing half the amount under the "5G-BALTICS" project.

Mobile operator Tele2 is continuing to expand its network infrastructure along the international Via Baltica highway, investing around €800,000 to secure uninterrupted 5G coverage across the Latvian section. The European Union is co-financing half of this amount.
The company says its customers already enjoy seamless 4G and 5G connectivity when crossing into Latvia from Lithuania or Estonia. Work on 5G development along Via Baltica is being carried out both independently and together with partners as part of the "5G-BALTICS" project.
New frequencies by year-end
According to Tele2 technical director Līga Krūmiņa, base stations near the highway will begin using the 1500 MHz and 3500 MHz frequency bands by the end of this year. This is expected to significantly increase mobile internet speeds and improve network capacity. Uninterrupted 5G coverage means customers will not experience the disruptions typically caused by switching to another operator's network when crossing a state border.
Tele2 also notes it remains the only mobile operator in Latvia offering uninterrupted voice calls on the 4G network via VoLTE (Voice over LTE) technology when customers enter Latvia from neighboring countries.
Project runs through 2027
The investment covers both operating base stations on the new frequencies and establishing continuous 5G connectivity at Latvia's borders with Estonia and Lithuania. Implementation of the "5G-BALTICS" project is set to conclude on 31 December 2027, and it has received European Union funding under the Connecting Europe Facility.
Partners from all three Baltic states are involved in the project: in Estonia, TalTech, the Estonian Broadband Development Fund, Telia and Tele2; in Latvia, Elisa, Tet and Tele2; and in Lithuania, Via Lietuva, Tele2 and Telia.
