Tennessee governor denies clemency for Christa Pike as execution date nears

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee announced he will not intervene in the case of Christa Gail Pike, upholding her death sentence after what he described as a thorough review of her clemency request. Pike's legal team had filed the petition earlier this month, asking that her sentence be commuted to life in prison.

Attorneys Stephen Ferrell, Kelly Gleason and Randy Spivey said the decision puts Tennessee in an unprecedented position, as Pike would become the first person the state has executed in the modern death penalty era for a crime committed as a teenager. In a statement issued Monday, they argued the governor's decision disregards scientific and legal consensus that an 18-year-old's brain is not yet fully developed, making 18 too young an age to face execution.

The 1995 killing

The case drew intense media attention in Knoxville, Tennessee, after 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer was found dead with a pentagram, a symbol associated with Satanic ritual, carved into her chest. Pike had accused Colleen of insulting her and attempting to steal her boyfriend. Two other people who lived at the same camp later testified that Pike had boasted about the killing both before and after it occurred, and had shown them a piece of Colleen's skull.

A year after the murder, Pike was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to death. Her then-boyfriend, Tadaryl Shipp, who was 17 at the time of the offence, received a life sentence with the possibility of parole. At the start of her incarceration, 21-year-old Pike was the youngest person on Tennessee's death row, according to the state's Department of Corrections.

Her execution is scheduled for 30 September, following years of unsuccessful appeals. Colleen's mother has said she wants the execution to proceed so her daughter can finally rest.
