Tentoglou wins European long jump title for the fourth consecutive time
Greek athlete Miltiadis Tentoglou claimed gold in the long jump at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham for the fourth time in a row. Latvia's athletes will begin competing on Thursday.
Two-time Olympic champion Miltiadis Tentoglou of Greece won the long jump title at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham on Tuesday, marking his fourth consecutive continental title in the event.
The world season leader secured the top result on his fourth attempt, reaching 8.44 metres. Before that, Switzerland's Simon Ehammer had led with 8.29 metres achieved on his second attempt. Tentoglou skipped his final two attempts, while Ehammer was unable to improve his mark.
Tentoglou, who is also the 2023 world champion, surpassed the eight-metre mark on each of his other three jumps as well, recording 8.27, 8.19 and 8.27 metres. Bulgaria's Bozhidar Saraboyukov took third place with 8.26 metres, achieved on his final attempt.
Latvian athletes to begin competing Thursday
No Latvian athletes competed on Tuesday, but starting Thursday, seven Latvian representatives will take part in the championships. Anete Sietiņa, Patriks Gailums and Krišjānis Suntažs will compete in the javelin throw, Valters Kreišs in the pole vault, and Oskars Grava in the 200 metres. In race walking, Raivo Saulgriezis will compete in the marathon and Modra Liepiņa in the half marathon.
Latvia's delegation also includes coaches Gints Palameiks, Mareks Ārents, Viktors Lācis, Ilmārs Saulgriezis, Andis Anškins and Modris Liepiņš, along with physiotherapist Toms Zvonkovs.
The European Championships in Birmingham will conclude on Sunday.
