Tesla finally sets debut date for long-delayed second-gen Roadster
Tesla has announced that its second-generation electric hypercar Roadster will be unveiled on October 10, after years of repeated delays since its 2017 prototype reveal.
Tesla's official X account has announced that the long-awaited second-generation Roadster will finally be unveiled on October 10, provided the date isn't pushed back again. The company's website already features a countdown to the reveal, accompanied by an image that appears to hint at cold-gas thrusters — technology tied to reports of a flying variant developed with SpaceX involvement.
In August, The Information reported that Tesla was preparing to launch the Roadster soon, specifically highlighting a flying capability. It remains unclear exactly how Tesla intends to deliver on this feature, and there's a possibility the final result may prove less impressive than promised, similar to how the Cybertruck's so-called "Wade Mode" turned out.
A long wait
Those anticipating the updated Roadster have been waiting since the original prototype was first shown off in 2017. At that time, Tesla claimed the car would accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under two seconds, reach a top speed above 250 mph, and offer more than 600 miles of range on a single charge. The base model was priced at $200,000, while a Founder's Edition version cost $250,000.
Some customers who put down $50,000 reservations for the vehicle have since canceled them, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and technology YouTuber Marques Brownlee.
