An expedition along the route from Kolka to Ainaži put four premium-segment electric vehicles to the test: Volvo EX90, Audi A6 e-tron, XPENG G9 and Lexus RZ. Rainy weather conditions provided a good opportunity to assess the cars' sound insulation and driving feel.

Lexus RZ with unconventional steering

The Lexus RZ550e stands out for a steering system not directly connected to the wheels in the traditional sense. The model is available only in F Sport trim, starting at 82,000 euros, with power exceeding 400 horsepower and acceleration to 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds. Its 77 kWh battery limits overall range.

Volvo EX90 - bigger and more advanced

The Volvo EX90 offers a bright, spacious cabin and, for the 2027 model year, an 800-volt platform with a 106 kWh battery and fast charging. The Twin Motor Performance version reaches up to 680 horsepower, while the standard twin-motor version delivers over 450 horsepower and a range above 600 km. Prices start around 90,000 euros.

XPENG G9 with powerful charging and an entertainment screen

The XPENG G9's 93 kWh battery can be charged at up to 450 kilowatts. Besides the central display, the car features a large second screen for the passenger. In sport mode only the engine character changes, while steering and suspension settings must be adjusted separately. The model produces 575 horsepower, with a range of up to 600 km on paper and around 500 km in real-world driving.

Audi A6 e-tron stands out for its shape

Unlike the other vehicles, the Audi A6 e-tron is a liftback rather than an SUV. The cabin is comfortable but noticeably noisier, with tire noise particularly audible. In full trim, the car's price reaches 109,000 euros. The model features clear controls and sharp displays, though it retains the low-quality rearview camera typical of Volkswagen Group models.

The overland route from Kolka to Ainaži spans roughly 275 kilometers, since there is no direct coastal road, requiring drivers to use the Riga bypass or drive through the city.
