On the second Sunday of September, Latvia marks Father's Day — a holiday honoring all fathers and grandfathers. In connection with this occasion, focus has turned to children's literature in which fathers and grandfathers play the central role.

Varied portrayals of fathers

In children's books, the character of a father or grandfather can appear in many different forms, much as in real life. In one story a father might be temperamental, in another disobedient; one character searches for a wife, while another devotes himself to writing a book. This variety mirrors how diverse the roles and personalities of fathers can be in reality as well.

Reading suggestions

To mark Father's Day, a selection of books has been compiled that includes original works by Latvian authors as well as translations of foreign children's literature into Latvian. What unites all these works is their shared theme — fathers and grandfathers and their relationships with children and grandchildren. Such a selection can serve as inspiration for parents and grandparents looking for a gift or something to read together with children ahead of the holiday.
