The Mandalorian and Grogu to stream on Disney+ September 2

The Star Wars film The Mandalorian and Grogu will arrive on Disney+ on September 2. The movie debuted in cinemas at the end of May, so the streaming premiere comes just over three months after its theatrical release and six weeks after it became available digitally to rent or buy.

The film is a sequel to the hit series The Mandalorian, which helped launch the Disney+ platform. Both the series and the film follow the title character, a Mandalorian bounty hunter, and his ward, a 55-year-old member of Yoda's species who looks like a baby. Members of that species age differently.

Critics gave the film a fairly muted response, with many saying it felt more like a string of TV episodes stitched together than a proper movie. The Engadget writer who saw it agrees with that assessment, though they still describe it as an entertaining romp, well suited for a Friday night Disney+ watch party. It is likely to perform well on the platform and is a decent choice for older kids and teens.

The plot is straightforward, and there is not much dialogue because the two leads are a puppet and a barely speaking man in full armor. Later, they are joined by Jabba the Hutt's muscular son. The film could also help Disney+ with customer retention.

Currently, the only major Star Wars show on the horizon is season two of Ahsoka. There has also been little news about Marvel, though a Vision series is expected in October and the third season of Daredevil: Born Again is slated for next year. Disney may be saving announcements for its D23 event, which takes place this weekend.
