Meta announced on Monday that it is rolling out its Meta AI chatbot within Threads' direct messages, giving users a new way to interact with the AI assistant privately. Previously, users in select markets could only interact with Meta AI in public posts, similar to Grok on X. This new integration enables users to have private conversations with the AI.

The update allows users to share Threads posts, images, links, and videos directly with Meta AI. They can also ask follow-up questions and explore topics in more depth. The rollout begins globally starting Monday, according to the company.

Meta AI is already available in DMs on Meta's other platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. By bringing this feature to Threads, Meta aims to keep users within its ecosystem and discourage them from using third-party assistants like OpenAI's ChatGPT or Google Gemini.

Meta continues to test Meta AI in Threads' public feeds in several global markets, taking feedback into account before expanding more broadly. Users who prefer to see fewer AI responses in their feed can mute @meta.ai, use the "Not interested" option on any Meta AI post, or hide Meta AI replies that appear on their own posts.

With this move, Meta is positioning Threads as a rival to X, where users can get information and recommendations without leaving the app.
