Court Weighs Detention for Police Officer Who Fatally Beat Fashion Designer

The Kurzeme District Court in Liepāja is currently deliberating on whether to impose pre-trial detention on a police officer arrested on suspicion of beating a teacher to death during the Priekule town festival.

The incident occurred on July 26, when a conflict broke out between several individuals. Witnesses report that the suspect delivered a single powerful blow to the victim, who later died at the scene despite half an hour of resuscitation efforts by medics.

The arrested officer is a junior inspector with the State Police, who was under the influence of alcohol and off-duty at the time. He has been in service since September 2022 and had no prior disciplinary record.

A criminal investigation has been launched under Article 125, Section 3 of the Criminal Law, which covers causing grievous bodily harm resulting in death through negligence. The case will be handed over to the Internal Security Bureau for further investigation.

The victim was a teacher at the Liepāja Music, Art and Design Secondary School and the head of the "Fashion Design" program. Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs condemned the incident on social media, while Interior Minister Jānis Dombrava promised an impartial investigation.
