Trial Begins for Financier Accused of Spying for Russia
On Thursday, a court in Riga started hearing the case of financier Jevgenijs Okss, charged with espionage on behalf of Russia, including collecting information on two Latvian residents and meeting with a Russian intelligence officer in Moscow.
A trial opened on Thursday, July 30, at a Riga court against financier Jevgenijs Okss, who is accused of spying for the Russian Federation.
According to the indictment, Okss collaborated with the pro-Kremlin organization "Baltijas antifašisti" (Baltic Antifascists). He gathered intelligence on two individuals residing in Latvia, acting in Russia's interests. The accused also traveled to Moscow, where he met with a representative of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB).
The charges detail that Okss systematically collected data and passed it to Russian intelligence services. The case materials include evidence of his communications with organization members and intelligence officials during the period in question.
The court is currently examining evidence and hearing the defendant's testimony. No verdict has been reached yet. National security authorities emphasize that uncovering such cases is crucial for Latvia's security.
