Criminal Case Over Toddler Andrey's Death Closed – Mother Passed Away
Latgale District Court has reported that the criminal case regarding the death of two-year-old Andrey has been terminated because the accused mother has died.

The Latgale District Court has informed the Information Center of the Ministry of the Interior that the criminal case concerning the death of two-year-old Andrey, which was returned from the appellate court, cannot be enforced as the defendant is deceased.
In November last year, the Latgale District Court in Daugavpils found the boy's mother guilty of cruel treatment of a minor and manslaughter. She was sentenced to two years, nine months, and 28 days in prison, and ordered to pay €2,900 in state compensation that had been paid to the child's father.
Latgale Regional Court partially amended the first-instance verdict, reducing the prison term to two years and six months. The court also relieved the woman from covering the costs of state-provided legal aid, ruling that these expenses be covered from the state budget. The full appellate ruling became available on June 18 of this year.
The tragedy occurred in February last year in the Rēzekne district. The accused, along with others, consumed alcohol and failed to properly supervise her two-year-old son. After waking from a nap, the child accessed alcohol and then went outside alone without shoes or outerwear into the snow. The boy was found without signs of life.
