TikTok Launches Standalone Shopping App TikTok Shop in Four Asian Countries

The social network TikTok has released a separate shopping app, TikTok Shop, currently available in four Southeast Asian countries. The move strengthens its challenge to Amazon and Temu in e-commerce.

The social network TikTok, which until now sold goods within its own platform, has quietly launched a standalone shopping app called TikTok Shop. It is already available in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines on both Android and iOS devices. The step suggests the company wants to strengthen its position in e-commerce, or online retail, where it competes with companies such as Amazon and Temu.

What the app offers

Users get personalised product recommendations and can shop while watching livestreams and short videos. Discounts available only in the new app are also on offer. Shoppers can pay for purchases, track deliveries and contact customer support within it. The app's description also mentions free delivery and special offers on a first order.

Competition and outlook

Amazon had earlier tried to win over part of TikTok's audience by adding a short-video section called Inspire to its own platform. If TikTok Shop is introduced in the United States, the company would also have to compete with major retailers Walmart and Target.

It is not yet known whether or when the app will become available in other markets, including Europe.
