Tierney shows value as Celtic title defence begins
Kieran Tierney delivered a standout performance as Celtic opened their Scottish Premiership title defence with a win over Dundee, setting up Benjamin Nygren's decisive goal. The left-back's continued importance is underlined by his assist numbers and the lack of cover in his position.
Celtic began their Scottish Premiership title defence with a hard-fought victory over Dundee, and Kieran Tierney was again the key figure. The left-back, who rejoined Celtic from Arsenal in 2025, supplied the cross for Benjamin Nygren to head in the winning goal, helping the champions overcome a dogged visiting side.
Tierney was Celtic's most creative threat on the night, creating four chances and registering two shots on target, while his eight crosses were a team high. BBC Scotland's chief sports writer Tom English described his display as "old Kieran Tierney," praising his attacking forays and defensive work.
The Scotland international's value to Celtic has been evident throughout the past season. He recorded 12 assists – more than any other Celtic player – and added six goals from defence. League-wide, only Falkirk's Calvin Miller managed more assists, while Daizen Maeda was the only Celtic player to create more big chances, with 14 to Tierney's 12. Defensively, he consistently ranks among the league's best for tackles, clearances and blocked shots.
Despite concerns over his workload, Tierney featured frequently, with only three full-backs across the league playing more minutes. However, he completed the full 90 minutes in just 10 league outings.
With last season's loanee Marcelo Sarrachi back at Boca Juniors, Celtic currently have no senior left-back alternative to Tierney. Manager Martin O'Neill acknowledged the need for cover, saying that Tierney cannot play every game and that the club is looking into options.
Transfer speculation has linked the 29-year-old with a move to Spain, with Osasuna reportedly making an enquiry. Celtic, however, are expected to reject any approach. Former captain Scott Brown dismissed the idea of a departure, insisting Tierney loves the club and will remain. Brown also highlighted the importance of Tierney, Callum McGregor and James Forrest as the "backbone" of the team.
Tierney's contract runs until 2030, and his performance against Dundee underlined exactly why Celtic are so keen to keep him.
