New eco-fashion operetta "Parisian Bohemia" to turn its characters into insects

A non-governmental musical theatre is preparing a new operetta, "Parisian Bohemia," inspired by Imre Kálmán's "The Violet of Montmartre," in which all the characters are portrayed as insects. The production blends high fashion with jazz music.

Since the closure of the state Riga Operetta Theatre, the genre has been kept alive in Latvia by a professional non-governmental musical theatre, which is now working on an unusual new production. The eco-fashion operetta "Parisian Bohemia" is being created, based on Imre Kálmán's operetta "The Violet of Montmartre."

The production is described as combining several artistic elements — insect imagery, high fashion, and jazz arrangements. The creators aim to speak to audiences in a contemporary language while preserving the operetta's traditional themes of love and dreams.

A view through an insect's eyes

Director Sonora Vaice explains that the main idea was to look at the story from an outside perspective — as if seen through the eyes of insects. All the characters in the production have been transformed into insects, each with their own ideas about life, their goals, and how they intend to achieve them.

This approach allows the classic operetta plot to be presented from an unusual angle, keeping the essence of the story while changing its visual and figurative expression.

Costumes already ready

During the filming of the storyline, all costume sketches for the production were created, and the actors were able to try on the finished costumes for the first time, stepping into their insect characters. This shows that work on the production is progressing and moving toward its next stage.
